Top 6 Mistakes to Avoid When Suffering From Back Pain.

If you are suffering from back pain for the first time, we have some advice for you so you don’t make the same mistakes as so many others have.

Mistake #1: Ignoring your pain for too long
While it's true that low back pain can get better within a few weeks, don't make the mistake of ignoring it. Go to a spine specialist to get a diagnosis and treatment plan. With a correct diagnosis, you can start to map out a recovery plan that may include exercise, massage and Chiropractic.

Mistake #2: Relying on your general practitioner for too long
Primary care physicians and general practitioners typically don’t have in-depth training in spine care, so it may be harder to get an accurate diagnosis and/or treatment plan. The best way your primary care doctor can help you is by referring you to an excellent spine professional.
If your back pain is severe and lasts for more than a couple of weeks, it's time to ask your primary care doctor for a referral to a Doctor of Chiropractic (spine specialist).
Mistake #3: Choosing surgery too quickly
For many, it's tempting to view spine surgery as a "quick fix." However, with a few exceptions, it is typically recommended to try non-surgical treatment for at least several weeks or months before seeing a spine surgeon. While surgery can fix a specific anatomical problem, such as a disc pressing on a nerve, the only way to completely heal is through a sustained exercise and rehabilitation program. Even with surgery, you'll need to exercise.
Mistake #4: Postponing back surgery for too long
On the other hand, for certain conditions patients tend to do better if they have surgery sooner. For example, when there is arm or leg weakness because a nerve root is pinched, it is often best to take pressure off the nerve root through surgery sooner to avoid developing permanent nerve damage.

Mistake #5: Focusing too much on the X-ray/MRI results.
X-rays and MRIs are just pictures; they do not show pain. In fact, you may have terrible pain and an MRI that shows a normal-looking spine, or you may have an MRI that shows a large herniated disc yet have no pain. A good Chiropractor will be able to read your MRI results and combine them with a full clinical work up to produce an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.

Mistake #6: Remaining inactive
If you are in pain, one or two days of doctor-recommended rest is fine. However, over time lack of activity will in fact lead to more pain. Keeping your back and supporting structures flexible and strong means that they can better support your spine, hasten the healing process, and minimize the chance of future pain or injury. The abdominal and back muscles don't get much exercise from everyday activities and need specific attention.
Most importantly, back pain is different for everyone, so trust yourself - and get educated about your situation - so you have the best chance of getting better quickly.

Before you call, do your homework.

Is it time to call a chiropractor? The right chiropractor can help you cope with back and neck pain, but don’t assume that just any chiropractor is the right one for you. Use these suggestions to help you find the right fit and get the most out of your treatment.

Once you've decided on a chiropractor, consider your first appointment to be like a job interview, to make sure the partnership will be a good fit.

Plan to ask your chiropractor these questions at the first visit or consultation:
  • Do you treat conditions other than neuromusculoskeletal problems that have a mechanical origin? Be on guard for any chiropractor who claims he or she can cure ear infections, colic, asthma, and any other systemic problems. An editor of the New England Journal of Medicine put it best: "That spinal manipulation is somewhat effective symptomatic therapy for some patients with acute low back pain is, I believe, no longer in dispute, but there appears to be little evidence to support the value of spinal manipulation for non-musculoskeletal conditions. For this reason, I think it is currently inappropriate to consider chiropractic as a broad-based alternative to traditional medical care."
  •  Did you acquire any post-graduate degrees? If your chiropractor has a post-graduate degree or special training in treating your condition, it's a good sign that he or she may be well-qualified to treat your specific problem.
  • What is your technique? Some chiropractors prefer a more forceful manipulation which may offer immediate relief, while others prefer to use a more gentle and gradual approach. Neither technique is necessarily better, but you may be more comfortable with one or the other.
  • Will you respect my preferences for a treatment plan? For example, if you prefer mobilization (like a stretch) over spinal manipulation (with the pop) will you get any pushback from him or her?
  • How much experience do you have using the technique you are recommending? If your chiropractor is recommending a specific technique, e.g. Graston Technique, or Active Release Technique, ask for training that they have received (and go online to see if this is the recommended amount of training).
  • Do you take X-rays in the office when necessary? Be wary of chiropractors who take X-rays in the office regardless of the problem.
  • What services do you provide? Ideally, the chiropractor can provide adjunctive therapy such as massage therapy, physical therapy, and nutritional counseling under one roof. If these services are not available in the actual clinic, ask the chiropractor if he or she works with other professionals in these areas, and if you will have help coordinating your care.
  • What are the top 3 things I can do to get the best results? A good chiropractor will have an effective, personal treatment plan designed just for you. Make sure your chiropractor has your best interest in mind by asking him or her to outline a specific and detailed plan of action.
  • How is billing handled? You may have to submit your own claims, which can become cumbersome. Some insurance will only cover certain procedures. If a procedure is not covered, many clinics will offer discounts. Ask if the clinic accepts your insurance and how the clinic will handle procedures that are not covered by your insurance.
  • Under what circumstances would I need to see a different practitioner or spine specialist? If you fail to improve under the chiropractor's care, you will probably need to see a specialist. Does your chiropractor acknowledge this and agree? At what point will he or she decide it is time to refer you to a specialist?
  • Ask friends and family for a recommendation. It goes without saying that this is the gold standard we all use to find a best babysitter, restaurant, etc. For me personally, I have a handful of friends I can always trust for great recommendations because we have similar values and standards.
  • Google the chiropractor. Hopefully, all you will see are his or her published marathon times, but if he or she has been in trouble with the law, you will most certainly find it on Google.
  • Has he or she been disciplined by the state? There are enough chiropractors to choose from. If the one you are considering has been disciplined by any board, find someone else.
A little extra work can go a long way when you are choosing a chiropractor. These practical guidelines can set you in the right direction for making the best choice.

We realize you have a choice in who you choose to provide your healthcare services. If you, a friend or family member requires care for low back pain, we sincerely appreciate the trust and confidence shown by choosing our services and look forward in serving you and your family presently and, in the future.

Chiropractic, What Kind of Treatment Are You Getting?

In Chiropractic, there are many different treatment options available to patients.  With so many Chiropractors in Friendswood, TX and the surrounding areas, how do you determine your best options?  Do you go with the cheap one, do you go with the expensive one, do you go with the new one or do you go with the old one?  I would like to outline some things in this article that might make the decision easier on you.

In this section, we will discuss passive modalities that may be offered in a Chiropractic office.  A passive modality is a treatment option that is done to you, while you are laying still and does not require any effort on your part.  Below, I have listed and described these modalities, as well as placed a rank on each one for effectiveness:
Electrical Muscle Stimulation:  used to help reduce muscle spasm and inflammation.  ***
Moist Heat: used to increase blood flow to an area and decrease muscle spasm.  **
Ice: used to decrease blood flow to an area, reduce inflammation and pain.  **
Ultrasound:  used to decrease pain and inflammation by sending ultrasound waves deeper than a heating pad can reach.  ***
Low Level Laser: used to decrease pain and inflammation by penetrating the skin and fatty tissue to alter cell function. *****
Inter-segmental Traction: also known as the “roller table” is used to promote movement within the spinal joints. *
Percussion: usually some type of vibration instrument is used to loosen tight muscles. *
Traction: stretches the spine and the muscles around it. *
Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression: used to relieve pressure on bulging discs, creates a pumping effect to rehydrate discs and decrease pressure on pinched nerves. *****
Massage: “Sweedish Massage” used to relax taught and tender muscles. **
Graston Technique:  used to break apart knots and scar tissue in muscles. *****
Kinesio Taping:  used to give support to injured muscles without restricting range of motion.  Can also be applied to reduce inflammation and bruising. ****

Now, I know what you are thinking, “Wow, that sounds great, if I had all of that I would feel great every day!”  But, if it were only that easy, there wouldn’t be anyone in pain today.  Typically, more than 2 passive modalities is pretty redundant and is unnecessary since they have similar goals.  Each one of these passive modalities has its limitations, and can only aide in your recovery by a small percentage.

If you are in pain, and you are going to an office that provides several of the lower ranked modalities on a regular basis without seeing results, you may want to look for better care elsewhere.

The next section touches on active modalities.  Active modalities require the patient to take part in their recovery and typically give a much better long term result than passive modalities.
Therapeutic Exercise:  exercises used to increase the strength, flexibility, and control of the affected structures.  *****
Active Release Technique:  combines actively contracting and stretching an injured muscle while the practitioner applies pressure to it and its tendon to release the tension. *****
PNF Stretching: a combination of active contraction then a passive stretch applied with the goal of increasing flexibility and range of motion to the affected muscles.  *****

If your provider is combining some of these treatment methods along with spinal and extremity manipulation, your chance for a speedy recovery has highly increased.

Speaking of Spinal and Extremity adjusting, does your Chiropractor manipulate your shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee or ankle when you complain of a problem in those areas or does he perform spinal manipulation only?   Most people think of Chiropractors for neck and back pain, but Chiropractors can treat any muscle and any joint in the body.  Some Chiropractors may not have been properly trained on extremity manipulation, so they choose to leave it alone.

At Select Spine & Sports Medicine, Dr. Joe Denke is a Certified Chiropractic Sports Practitioner who offers the best treatment methods in physical medicine today.  If you have been to a Chiropractor and you feel like you were, “just another patient” and didn’t get some of the higher quality treatment methods mentioned above, give us a call and let us show you what we have to offer.

Friendswood, TX Chiropractor Alleviates Slipped Disc Pain Safely

A slipped disc can result in back problems, leg pain, weakness in one's legs and other abnormal functions of the lower extremities. When discs slip or herniated, the can cause pressure on the nerves that results in pain. A Friendswood chiropractor provides therapy to help relieve the pain and related conditions.

The discs lie between the vertebrae and consist of an outer ring of fibrous material surrounding a central soft portion. The disc is not served by blood vessels, but receives nourishment as the vertebrae move forcing blood and other fluids through its structure. Without this motion, the fibrous ring can dry and tear, allowing the disc to bulge. This is referred to as a slipped disc.

Subluxations can also cause herniated discs. The subluxation is caused when one or more of the vertebrae move out of their normal position and put unnatural pressure on one side of the disc. This creates pressure on the spinal nerves and causes pain. The pressure interferes with signals that ordinarily travel using the nerves.

While some slipped discs cause no pain at all, others cause pain in the lower back. The pain may also radiate down one or both legs. Many people experience numbness and tingling of the affected leg. Over time, the condition can cause weakness in the legs or feet.

Chiropractors offer a drug free, surgery free alternative therapy for slipped discs. The doctor corrects the subluxation with a series of spinal adjustments. As the pressure is relieved from the nerves, the body's natural healing powers take over and the pain and other symptoms are reduced.

Early intervention by a doctor of chiropractic can prevent the condition from becoming worse and one's pain increasing. For many people, chiropractic is the first choice for spine health. A Friendswood chiropractor can locate the source of an individual's pain and make the corrections needed to begin the healing process.

Chiropractic Adjustments Help Leg Pain Sufferers Find Relief In Friendswood, TX

Sciatica affects up to three percent of American adults. It can cause intense, chronic pain throughout the length of the leg. Medications and injections used to manage the symptoms do not resolve the underlying disorder. A Friendswood chiropractor provides a safe and effective, drug-free solution for sciatica pain.

The sciatic is the longest nerve in the human body. It travels from the lower back through the buttocks and down the legs to the feet. If the nerve is compressed, it broadcasts distress signals along its entire pathway. Sciatic suffers often experience throbbing aches or shooting pains running from the hips to the toes. In addition, they may have symptoms such as cramping, tingling, numbness or prickling in particular areas.

Sciatica stems from abnormalities near the base of the spine. The majority of instances are caused by a herniated disc. When a disc prolapses, the inner core can slide out, trapping the sciatic nerve. Misaligned vertebrae in the lumbar area can also trigger sciatica if they put excess pressure on the spinal cord.

Sciatica sufferers receive a thorough evaluation at the Friendswood clinic. The chiropractor goes over the symptoms before conducting a physical examination and performing a series of neurological tests. The precise point at which the sciatic nerve is constricted is revealed using MRI scans.

The chiropractor uses careful manual adjustments to restore a prolapsed disc or realign the vertebrae. These procedures increase space around the spinal cord, removing pressure from the sciatic nerve to alleviate pain at its source. Soft tissue massage techniques are applied to relax tense leg muscles, restore flexibility and soothe away aches.

After the sciatica has been resolved, the Friendswood chiropractor guides patients through a rehabilitation program. Exercises and stretches are used to enhance range of motion, increase flexibility and strengthen muscles. Patients are also advised on ways to maintain good posture and prevent the recurrence of sciatica pain.

Leg pain sufferers can resort to natural and safe therapies by seeing an experienced Friendswood chiropractor. For further information, click here at now.

Select Spine & Sports Medicine and Dr. Joe Denke, DC offer safe and effective chiropractic and neuromuscular techniques which are perfect for athletic injuries. These are useful for alleviating pain and related symptoms that occur due to injuries and overuse of muscles and joints.

PRESS RELEASE: Friendswood, TX, 30-MAY-2013 - Select Spine & Sports Medicine and Dr. Joe Denke DC, Friendswood chiropractor, are pleased to announce that recovery methods and techniques offered through chiropractic measures assist in fast relief from injuries incurred in the course of sports, recreational activities and active games. The injuries that happen to athletes are numerous and varied. Fortunately there is a range of chiropractic measures that bring about rapid improvement.

The methods implemented by a Friendswood chiropractor are non-invasive and fully natural. A typical intervention will be spinal manipulation and other chiropractic care methods. A chiropractic plan doesn't incorporate pharmaceuticals, which do not help and may even harm the body if used over long periods.

"Spinal Manipulative Therapy", Dr. Denke explained, "is a chiropractic method that improves the spinal column alignment. When the vertebrae are aligned, the nerve impulses can move easily and quickly back and forth from the extremities to the brain. The techniques are helpful in restoring tissue generation and promoting joint mobility. With this in place, there is decreased recovery time after an injury."

This chiropractic technique has identified particular movements which reduce specific areas of pain that have been experienced by the athlete. Some of the conditions where the technique is effective include spinal pain, back pain, tendonitis, and joint pain.

Chiropractor In Friendswood, TX Assists In Helping Locals Get Hip Pain Relief

There are many reasons individuals suffer from hip pain, but many find relief through a Friendswood chiropractor. Chiropractors use non-invasive methods for providing relief without resorting to medication. Frequently chiropractic offers a solution for acute as well as chronic pain.

Chiropractors begin by using a physical exam to determine the source of the pain. While it may be felt in the hip, the underlying problem is often in the spine. Sometimes knee or foot problems cause changes in the gait that can also affect the hip and cause pain.

Tendonitis or arthritis are other sources of hip pain. In older adults, fractures due to osteoporosis could be the problem. Pain can originate in muscles, bones or even nerves. If the hip is dislocated, the chiropractic doctor may make an adjustment to restore it to a normal position and end the suffering.

Once the doctor of chiropractic determines the cause of one's pain, a plan for therapy will be developed. This can involve more than a single approach. Often, the recovery time is shortened if the chiropractic doctor uses multiple therapies.

In most cases, the patient will need to return several times to experience elimination of symptoms. The gentle therapy is effective, but natural healing can take time. With proper care and following the doctor's directions, the problem may not return.

Chiropractors often provide lifestyle counseling and exercises to be continued at home. These help to ensure the problem is resolved. Even if one suffers disease, his actions, such as sitting or standing with poor posture may make things worse.

When experiencing hip problems, individuals should consult with a Friendswood chiropractor. The doctor of chiropractic offers help for hip pain. While some find relief through a single visit, others will need to return several times to ensure elimination of their pain without the use of medication or surgery.

Friendswood, TX Chiropractor Helps Alleviate Pain From Auto Accidents

Whiplash is one of the most common injuries suffered in auto accidents. It can cause chronic neck pain along with a range of other debilitating symptoms. Problems may continue to develop for weeks after the incident. A Friendswood chiropractor provides safe and effective therapies to alleviate whiplash pain and accelerate the healing process.

When two cars collide, the occupants' bodies undergo rapid and intense acceleration and deceleration. Several types of damage can occur when a sudden impact causes the head to jerk forward and whip back. The sudden motion may strain or tear the tendons and ligaments in the neck. Neck vertebrae may shift out of position and compress sensitive nerves. Muscles may go into spasm.

Whiplash patients experience chronic neck pain, which may radiate down to affect the back and shoulders. Stiffness and swelling in the neck restrict movement of the head. Other whiplash symptoms may include headaches, fatigue, dizziness, blurred vision, facial pain, tinnitus or numbness and tingling in the arms.

A chiropractic consultation and examination can reveal the underlying causes of pain and other symptoms. At the Friendswood clinic, the doctor uses palpitation, x-rays and orthopedic tests to detect various types of injuries to the upper cervical spine and soft tissues. A therapy program is tailored to meet the patient's individual needs.

The chiropractor uses gentle manual adjustments to restore neck vertebrae to their correct positions, releasing pinched, irritated nerves. Stiff or spasming muscles are relaxed with soothing massage. Non-invasive therapies such as electro-stimulation or ultrasound may also be applied. These procedures alleviate pain, reduce swelling and encourage the body to repair injured tissues.

The Friendswood chiropractor advises whiplash sufferers about home care to help manage painful flare-ups and speed recovery. Patients are taught specific stretches and exercises to strengthen neck muscles and restore full range of motion. They are also cautioned to avoid certain movements or activities that could aggravate the problem.

Chiropractic Helps Relieve Pinched Nerves In Friendswood, TX

A pinched nerve is a painful condition which occurs when a nerve becomes compressed between other tissues, resulting in numbness, tingling, or burning, sharp pain. It most commonly occurs in the neck, back, or wrists. A Friendswood chiropractor can offer patients who are suffering with this condition a safe and natural route to healing and pain relief that does not involve medications or surgery.

If proper chiropractic care is not delayed, this disorder can be effectively corrected with no permanent damage to the body. However if it is not addressed soon enough, chronic pain may develop. Chiropractic medicine does not just address the pain itself, but actually seeks to find and heal the underlying disorder which causes it.

At the first appointment, the practitioner will examine the patient and take his or her medical background. If further tests are needed they will be requested. If a pinched nerve is detected, the next step will be to choose a therapy plan to eliminate it and relieve pain.

In some cases, the nerve compression is caused by a misplaced spinal vertebra or disc which is exerting pressure on the nerves around it. Spinal adjustments are usually the method of choice used to correct such an issue. Firm, manual pressure is applied quickly to the affected area which helps the misaligned part move back into place, thus alleviating pressure on the nerves and the resulting pain.

Other techniques may also be used in combination with adjustments to ease the pain of pinched nerve, depending on where it is located. The application of ice or ultrasound heat may be helpful in relieving swelling and inflammation. Performing specific stretching exercises can also be instrumental in relieving pain, and they can be easily carried out at home.

Once patients have begun attending therapy sessions with a Friendswood chiropractor, most will notice an almost instant improvement. As the condition responsible for causing the pinched nerve is healed, the pain will dissipate. Chiropractic care is not only very effective, but also safe and free of any side effects.

How To Get Safe Herniated Disc Relief With Chiropractic In Friendswood, TX

A herniated disc involves damage to the fibrocartilage of the spinal vertebrae contributing to nerve irritation and pain. Persons experiencing the rupture will often report painful symptoms in the back and lower extremities. The Friendswood chiropractor focuses on the spinal health and the delivery of safe techniques to relieve bulging disc discomfort.

In the event of disc herniation, the cushion positioned between the spinal vertebrae is pushed out of position. An increase in age, weight, and repetitive stress can contribute to rigidity of these discs, making it less elastic. When a rupture occurs, a portion of the discs will be forced outside of their normal boundary often pinching the spinal cord and surrounding nervous tissue.

The causes for injury include accidents, falls, weight gain, age or sudden twisting motions. The condition is characterized by a range of symptoms from muscle weakness as a result of nerve irritation to tingling, numbing and shocking pains in the lumbar region. The experience of the discomfort is attributed to the blockage or signals from the brain through the spine.

To determine the presence of a herniated disc, a physical examination will be required. The chiropractor will engage in methods to determine sensation, reflexes as well as muscle strength. A radiology report or X-rays may be implemented to assess the overall spinal column health.

Chiropractic therapy may prove beneficial for those experiencing a ruptured disc. The mode of recovery techniques that is most commonly applied is that of spinal adjustment. The method aims to relieve the pressure that is placed on the tissues through safe thrusts delivered to the spine.

Recommendations may include participation in prescribed exercises for overall spinal health. Although many individuals are more inclined to rest with injury, the right type of exercise regime can strengthen bones and prevent it from becoming brittle.
